WHO IS GURGEN
SIMONYAN?
Dr. Gurgen Simonyan, born in 1985 in Yerevan, Armenia, is a distinguished public and political figure, esteemed scholar, and dedicated educator. He holds a PhD in Political Science, having completed advanced studies in economics, management, and political governance, and has taught at multiple leading Armenian universities and institutions. Dr. Simonyan has played active roles in academic research, military service, and public affairs—serving in the Armenian Armed Forces, participating as a volunteer commander during the 2020 war, and leading subcommittees within Armenia’s Public Council. Renowned for his analytical contributions in both scientific literature and media, he has authored numerous academic works and entered politics by founding a new political force in 2024. In addition to his professional pursuits, Dr. Simonyan is passionate about art, known for his unique painting style, and has received national honors—underscoring his multifaceted impact on Armenian society.

Biography
Dr. Gurgen Simonyan was born on May 30, 1985, in Yerevan, Armenia, into a family of medical professionals. He has since emerged as a prominent public and political figure, as well as a scholar contributing significantly to the academic landscape of Armenia.
Education
Dr. Simonyan received his secondary education at Yerevan Basic School No. 77, named after Ruben Miroyan. He pursued undergraduate studies at the State University of Architecture and Construction of Yerevan, specializing in Economics and Management of Enterprises within the Faculty of Construction Technologies, and earned the qualification of engineer-economist (2001–2006).
He further advanced his academic credentials by obtaining a Master’s degree in Political Science (Political Governance and Political Analysis) from the Public Administration Academy of the Republic of Armenia (2008–2010). Continuing at the same institution, Dr. Simonyan pursued doctoral research on the modernization of Armenia’s national interests, successfully defending his dissertation and receiving a PhD in Political Science in 2014.
Academic and Professional Experience
Dr. Simonyan has been an active educator since 2015, lecturing at leading Armenian universities and educational centers, including:
- Command base faculty, Military University named after V. Sargsyan (2016–2018)
- Moscow State University (Yerevan branch, 2016–2018)
- Public Administration Academy of the Republic of Armenia (2018–2019)
- Yerevan Gladzor University (2022–2024)
- International Scientific-Educational Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (since 2015)
- Institute of International Relations and Social and Political Sciences, Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University
- “Mkhitaryan” Educational Complex (since 2022)
In addition to formal teaching, Dr. Simonyan has contributed as a lecturer at various informal educational forums and is the author of over 20 scientific articles published both locally and internationally.
Professionally, Dr. Simonyan served as a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law of the National Academy of Sciences (2015–2024) and as a Scientist-Analyst at the Military Strategic Studies Center of the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense Research University of Armenia’s Ministry of Defense (2019–2021). Since 2015, he has also been affiliated with the International Scientific-Educational Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.

Military Service
From 2006 to 2008, Dr. Simonyan completed his military service in the engineering troops of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in the Reserve in 2018 following military training and participated as a volunteer and platoon commander during the 44-day war of 2020, subsequently being demobilized into the reserves. In 2022, he was further promoted to Senior Lieutenant in the Reserve after additional training.

Between 2019 and 2020, Dr. Simonyan served as Chairman of the International Integration Subcommittee of the Religion, Diaspora, and International Integration Committee within the Public Council of Armenia. Since 2018, he has maintained an active media presence as a political analyst, distinguished by his academic rigor and insightful commentary, earning trust and engagement from a broad audience.
On May 28, 2024—Republic Day in Armenia—Dr. Simonyan officially entered politics, initiating the formation of an alternative political movement.

Dr. Simonyan is an accomplished amateur painter, drawing inspiration from his family’s extensive library and art collection from an early age. Although self-taught, his technique has been shaped by guidance from recognized artists, notably through his memorable interaction with Henrik Igityan. Dr. Simonyan continues to pursue painting, specializing in still lifes, nature, and portraiture.

Dr. Simonyan’s dedication has been recognized with the “Nelson Stepanyan” medal, awarded by the Armed Forces of Armenia on the occasion of the Army’s 30th anniversary. His exemplary service has also been acknowledged through commendations by military commanders, highlighting his integrity, discipline, and unwavering commitment to duty.
